Civilianized A Young Veteran Memoir Michael Anthony Books
Wow, what a difference a few years makes in Mr. Anthony's story telling, his writing and his ability to grab his readers while tackling the VERY IMPORTANT subject of PTSD. Anthony not only shares his personal challenges with this terrible disorder but he does so in a way that comes across as "human" and not like a trained Psychiatrist. This helps him personalize his story without seeming the least bit medicinal and without using only Latin like words that the basic "Joe" would need a dictionary to get through, even I didn't feel overwhelmed by the information, very sad and alarmed but not out of my comfort zone. This book is much better written, better told and well, just BETTER than his first first book Mass Qualities: A young medic's true story of death, deception and dishonor in Iraq. I tried, several times, to get through Mass Qualities but Mr. Anthony's words came off as whiny and "poor me-ish' and because I have read nearly 500 books about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, I've gotten a little spoiled by the hundreds of great reads out there. Please do not think that my dislike of his first book takes away any of my sincere gratitude, my high regard for his military duty or the appreciation I have for him being a part of the ONLY 1% of the population that answers the call for duty. This commitment, which takes away a lot of his family and personal time and which puts his life in harms way are just two of the many many reasons why I personally consider our military men and women to be a part of the one group that I hold with the highest of regard as well as the group I most admire and respect.
Anthony tackles the harsh topic of PTSD and he produces a winner. I have read numerous books about PTSD and while many are hard to understand this book really nails it so that the average person has a clue and doesn't get lost. He uses humor, real life experiences and even self- deprecation to help us readers get a clear picture about PTSD and how it takes a human being and tries to drown him with it's demon like characteristics.
I loved this book. I really enjoyed reading about the author's experiences in battle and at home and his personal story is truly a valuable and moving one that will hopefully wake up those in our medical world that just throw pills at this disorder and expect our soldiers to "get by" and just accept PTSD. The suicide rate is out of control within our military and hopefully books like this will help out those that want or need help but might be afraid or ashamed to reach out for the help they truly need and deserve. Our men and women in uniform deserve anything and everything once home and I find it appalling that more is done for these true American Heroes.
Thank you Mr. Anthony on a job well done. I look forward to your next piece of work with great anticipation. My biggest "thank you" is meant for you, your "brothers" in the service and your family for your dedication to all Americans to keep this country the best in the world. It was an honor to read your personal feelings about PTSD and your resolve to help others oozes out of your words.

Civilianized A Young Veteran Memoir Michael Anthony Books Reviews
NOTE a couple of small spoilers included in second paragraph
Michael Anthony was an Army medic who served a tour of duty in Iraq dealing with the horrors of saving and trying to save lives in the operating room. He came home to realize as too many have for centuries that the war was still with him. Anthony was handling his demons with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and for a time an expensive "class" that was supposed to make him into a ladies man. Much of the dark humor in the memoir is supplied by the course which seems to an outsider, and a woman, to be a parody. You could easily call it "How to Pick Up Women in Bars in Order to Score" for the $2,000 course, complete with groups that apparently exist nationwide where the graduates can meet. The results for meeting women were sadly predictable, but there was at least some bonding with other men, and a memorable meeting with a Vietnam vet still fighting his demons.
I haven't read Mr Anthony's other books, but I know from this one that he credits writing with saving his life. It seemed apparent to me that he did this without much outside support, not from the "course," from the V.A., from shrinks, and at least in this book his family seems minimal. Even the suicide hotline operator, while well-meaning, seems to operate in cliches, but from time to time the author does go back to the list they made of things that made him happy. The author went from seriously considering suicide to, within time, being able to get off the drugs and alcohol. He started writing, and the writing helped him deal with his friends who killed themselves, with the incompetent officer who was promoted over and over. He was even able to meet a woman and begin a relationship that did not rely on gimmicks. I highly recommend this book for those who want a better understanding of what veterans returning from our longest war are facing.
Michael Anthony does another remarkable job with his post-war memoir Civilianized. Anthony's ability to show the raw emotion of the life of a post-war soldier is captured candidly and in a very well-written manner within his newest book. One cannot help but become enveloped in this book thanks to Anthony's keen ability to be able to reflect upon his own life experiences. An excellent read!
Read it. Nicely done Michael.
As noted in his memoir, yellow ribbon magnets and "thank you for serving" are offered to veterans at no cost. In other words, talk is cheap. Michael Anthony drives home the existential dilemmas and soul-crushing wounds that stand between deployment and getting "civilianized". Research and studies and evidence-based treatment for veterans don't hold a candle to the enlightenment Anthony inspires. If you want to "get" veterans, read accounts written by those talented and courageous enough to expose first-hand experience.
Interesting book
Good book.
An up close and personal view of what one soldier's journey back to normal looks like. Michael shares with us his personal and private torment post deployment. He is brutally honest and strikingly bold in his storytelling. His story is both quirky and dark. It is his story and comes from a place of utterly revealing truth. Speaking as someone who deployed with Michael, we all face our own battles to be "civilianized". He has been generous enough to reveal to the average public his personal struggle. I think more public understanding will be attained through the sharing of stories. The moral injuries of these wars take a huge toll in the act of 22 veterans that commit suicide daily. The VA and other military organizations fight against this battle constantly. We need more soldiers telling their stories and letting the others know that they are not broken, but just on their own journey back to being "Civilianized".
