I reviewed the first book in this series, Ruin, in August 2013. I gave the book 5 stars and awarded it a 2013 Favorite Read. It was a phenomenal book with exceptional main characters and outstanding secondary characters. It was unforgettable because the story was very real, dealt with a subject that has touched everyone somewhere in their life and gave the reader a new look at life itself. Ruin taught the reader to look at life as a celebration each and every day. The life lessons and wisdom learned from this book have stayed in my heart, changed the way I looked at things and has made me value every moment, good and bad. I was so touched by this book. I didn’t think Rachel could deliver another book that had the same excellent caliber as the first book. Well Rachel, you proved me wrong again! Toxic delivered the same emotional impact that Ruin did. What was so remarkable was that the book featured the same amazing characters and added some new ones that were just as amazing. The story itself is very unexpected and very different from Ruin. In essence, it was a complete surprise.
If I could give Toxic more than 5 stars, I would!
I cannot say too much about the storyline in Toxic because it would give away spoilers. This is a book every reader needs to experience.
We met Gabe Hyde in the previous book. He was the dark haired, blue eyed, mysterious tattooed guy that every woman wanted. He was a dedicated friend and gave his support 100%. He kept his past secretive. He has been doing penance for past mistakes. He is trying to keep his past and present from colliding. He will do anything to become someone else, and keep the secrets buried. OMG…his secret blew me away. I never saw it coming. The extreme measures he went to in order to protect his secrets is understandable and heartbreaking.
When Gabe meets Saylor things change. He finds he wants to live in the present but doesn’t know how to let go of his secret. His secret will keep him from having any kind of meaningful future.
Saylor is a unique woman. She recognizes the wounded soul Gabe has become. She respects and cares for him, in spite of his tortured soul. She will do anything, even walk away, if it will heal his tortured soul. She is a strong individual and she gives Gabe her strength when he needs it most.
Wes, Kiersten and Lissa are there to support Gabe, no matter what. Their friendship is the only foundation Gabe can rely on, that is, until he meets Saylor. This group of friends will teach Gabe the true meaning of love, friendship and life. They will give him the strength and wisdom he desperately needs to move forward.
This book will shatter your heart. It will make you rejoice in life. It will make you value your loved ones. It will make you celebrate every moment.
Gabe stole my heart. Wes ingrained himself further into my soul. His infinite wisdom will forever stay in my soul. Saylor is the woman I have always wanted to be. Kiersten and Lissa are the true friends every person should have. And lastly, Princess will always have her happy ending.
Toxic is remarkable and impossible to forget.
I am addicted to the Ruin series. All the characters have become my family.
Well done Rachel van Dyken! You are an amazing writer.

This book slayed me in the best way possible. I actually finished it a week ago and am just now able to articulate my feelings. While I am used to reading emotionally charged stories from Rachel (Ruin and The Seaside Series), I was in no way expecting such heaviness from this book. This was definitely the most heartbreaking story she's ever written, but it was absolutely beautiful. It was raw and perfect. I can honestly say that Toxic may be my favorite book Rachel has ever written.
I went into Gabe's story wondering how he would be able to compete with the perfection that was Wes in Ruin, and much to my surprise, I ended up preferring Gabe's story in the end. In Ruin, Wes was handed the worst situation imaginable and his story was about overcoming circumstances that were completely out of his control. In Toxic, Gabe lives everyday overwhelmed with guilt because he feels responsible for the tragedy that destroyed his life.
I really liked Saylor. She's different than any other female lead I've read. She's strong and determined and facing her own set of challenges. Completely unaware of the fact that Gabe's past haunts him everyday, Saylor just assumes Gabe is a another hot guy with a crappy attitude who doesn't take life seriously. Little does she know that Gabe fights things on a daily basis that would cripple most people. As the story evolves and Saylor starts to see glimpses of the real Gabe, she realizes that she's able to relate to him in a way that most people can't. As they slowly begin to open up to one another, Gabe realizes that Saylor is everything he wants and everything that he doesn't deserve. After learning all about Gabe's past, Saylor realizes that Gabe is exactly what she wants, but how does she compete with his past that is still very much a part of his present? Saylor has to decide what to do when one of the things she loves most about Gabe is the one thing keeping them apart.
This book is tragic, but beautifully so. It's about love, loss, forgiveness, and learning that it's okay to live again. Please don't hesitate to buy this book! I promise you won't be disappointed!
(Oh, and congratulations to Rachel for writing the hottest kissing scene without an actual kiss that I've ever read! The piano scene legitimately had my heart racing! If you're on the fence about whether or not to read this book, the piano scene alone is worth it! Promise!)
