***4.5 Stars***I rarely read historical fiction, but I loved Cat Porter's debut novel, LOCK & KEY, and was eagerly anticipating WOLFSGATE. This is definitely not your mother's historical romance! It's very sexy, dark, and suspenseful with unexpected plot twists and turns that kept me on my toes and guessing throughout the book.
I knew this book wasn't going to be a light romantic romp, but I wasn't expecting to read about drug addiction, family betrayal, greed, and deception. Brandon and Justine are very complex, damaged characters who have suffered greatly and lost so much. At great personal risk, Justine rescues Brandon from the hospital where his cousin and uncle have kept him for the last two years, wasting away while they avail themselves of his inheritance. Justine seizes an opportunity to bring him home and nurse him back to health. The two get to know each other as adults as Brandon struggles to heal physically and to accept the changes and loss of the past four years, including learning which members of his family he can trust. Brandon is a very sympathetic character who has suffered family betrayal of the worst kind. He is understandably sad and mourns all that he has lost. His determination to exact revenge on those who have wronged him, however, leads to him inadvertently hurting Justine. He seems to think he can simply explain it away and all will be forgiven--not good enough. At least, not for me. I loved Justine and she didn't deserve to be treated badly by Brandon. She has suffered for years, living at Wolfsgate, subject to the dictates of her mean, addled stepfather and cruel stepbrother, William. In Justine, I was reminded of the realities of life for a woman in the 1790s; the limited choices, vulnerabilities and lack of autonomy. Justine is the smartest person in the room, and wise beyond her years, yet still retaining a sweet innocence. Her courage, strength, wit, determination to do the right thing, her instinct to protect those she cares about, and her refusal to let her stepfather and William get the best of her make her a character to admire and cheer for. Her relationship with Brandon quickly evolves from one of friendship to a passionate, yet uncertain, love affair. Wolfsgate is hotter than any of the historical romances I used to sneak from my mom's bookshelves. The love scenes are sexy and fun. Justine and Brandon truly complement one another and make a great couple.
There were several instances of lack of communication or miscommunication between Brandon and Justine, a trope that usually bothers me in romance. I'm happy to say that these situations were brief and were resolved before I lost patience. Even though I didn't like Brandon's plan for revenge, I wasn't entirely satisfied with the resolution.
WOLFSGATE is well-written, tightly plotted, romantic and sexy. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to all romance fans. I've heard from several friends that they don't read historical romance. Even though it's set in England in the 1790s, the plot and characters could easily work in a contemporary novel. Don't let the fact that it's an historical romance keep you from reading WOLFSGATE, you'll miss out on a truly wonderful book.

Wolfsgate edition by Cat Porter Jennifer RobertsHall Romance eBooks Reviews
Wolfsgate is a historical romance set in the 18th century. It's about a man named Brandon, the golden boy in his day, who comes home after a terrible situation to find everything different than when he left. He finds himself with Justine and so their tale of love, deception and revenge begins. This is a great story; the angst had my stomach clenching throughout and the sex scenes are incredibly hot. The deception weaved throughout the tale is quite something. I love the characters, the plot, the setting, and the ending. Great book!
I didn’t read this I devoured it. I don’t read many historical romances anymore so I am glad I decided to read this. Justine is so strong and yet broken at the same time. She manages to best her step brother and step uncle in a time when women have no options.
Brandon such a tragic story. He had it all and then he had nothing. His need for revenge could certainly ruin his chance of a happy future. Will he learn to trust Justine?
If you enjoy a good historical romance you should definitely read this!
I love historical romance novels. I also love Cat's writing. So when I found out she wrote one, I jumped right onto the ride and I don't regret one second or page of it.
First, let me tell you that this book is not a fluffy historical romance; it's a little bit darker, has a certain Bronte-esqe feel to it, yet it also brings of Austen, with certain characters and scenes.
Second, Lord Brandon Graven. Yes, this man deserves a paragraph dedicated to him in my review. Poor guy has been drugged out of his mind in a hospital, all alone, without anyone knowing he was still alive after a shipwreck. But he gets back to his rightful place, however everything has changed. Nothing is the way he had left it, when he went off to Jamaica, a few years prior. He wakes up married to a girl he grew up with, with no recollection of how and when that happened.
Now, our heroine may be a pawn used against the hero, but she's no delicate flower. She's actually strong and she's intelligent, outsmarting the bad guys and making sure everything is as it should be. Justine is a combination of Jane Eyre and Lizzie Bennett, if you will. At least, that's how I see her.
Of course, this book has some really HOT scenes - oh, that Lord Brandon and those beads - but it also has a few secrets that need to be told, lies, deception, schemes, and games.
Yes, there was a moment when I thought my heart would stop and I was thinking, "No, he wouldn't!", so I skipped ahead a few pages, then went back to read the ones I've skipped. What can I say, I was so invested in this story, in these characters and what was happening, that I was this close to banging my kindle against a hard surface, had he truly were to have done it. He didn't, so all was well.
I know that's all cryptic but believe me, you need to read this to experience the feels by yourself. If I tell you all about them, what remains for you to experience?
I loved this book, I do hope there will be more, and I am rating it 4.5 - 5 stars. Because really, Lord Brandon and his beads.
"Lord Graven, I thought you were controlling your urges."
"My urges for you are particularly strong these days. The one happy aftereffect of the opiate. It ceaselessly demands satisfaction."
Wolfsgate is a historical romance about what is essentially an 18th century arranged marriage. Full of jealousy, secrets and past pain, Brandon and Justine have fight for their happy ending. While the story was very intriguing and kept me constantly guessing about what everyone's motivations were, parts also left me wanting more romance and connection between the two without so much outside influences. By the end, though, I got exactly what I wanted even if I wished there was a bit more. As a fan of sexy historical romance, this was a the perfect lighter read with just enough of each character's dark and dreary pasts to keep me guessing.
