I became interested in the Dionne quints again after a number of years. The surviving quints, Annette and Cecile, are eighty this year. Multiples seem to be much more common now, and are usually not identical, so the birth of these identical quints still remains a marvel. Their story is authentic, complete with the record of how their parents treated them once they were booted out of "Quint Land" when the Ontario government grew tired of maintaining their expense. At nine years old, the girls found that their own family did not know them, that the press would eat them alive whenever they appeared in public together, and that even in growing up there would be little peace of mind for them while they overcame their sheltered upbringing. This story is sad, but well worth reading if not only for a guide in how to ameliorate family dynamics, but also how to treat other people as human beings instead of commodities.

This was a very good book. I am enjoying it. The girls had a very sad life after they left their nursery. They loved the nurses and the others who cared for them.. After they went to their family, they were mistreated by their siblings and parents. At age twelve, Emilie began to have seizures, back then, people were ashamed of them and it was kept a secret.
Having read the beginning of their lives I had to read this to get the rest of the story. Poor things. When things could have gone such a different way for them they lived through some rough stuff. Glad I got this and read the continuance of their lives. It really does answer some questions and fill in some blanks.
Good book, received quickly.

After seeing the CBS telepic about the Dionne Sisters, I read this book with much interest. "Family Secrets" is very different from the movie. In fact, it is the antithesis of the TV movie.

This book was published about 13 or 14 years ago in Canada and then reprinted in the US in English. It is supposedly the Dionne's "autobiography" however they've sold the rights to various journalists so it's hard to decipher which is the definitive book by them, since there appears to be a slew; all written around the same time-frame.

This book was interesting. It detailed their abusive childhood and how they were the victims of abuse by their parents. What I didn't like about the book was the sloppy way it was written. I suppose that happens with just about any low-budget book that's copied into a variety of second languages (including English.)

Currently, there's only 2 of the Dionne Sisters still alive. One of them passed away within the past few years. I hope they can find some happiness and peace.
I've been fascinated by their story ever since I saw the movie 'Million Dollar Babies', the film is very sympathetic to their parents which this book is definitely not.

There is a full web-site dedicated to the quints and I read a piece written by Annette Dionne in 1967 [...] where she tells us that they only achieved some level of peace when they moved back home with their family in 1942, this is in contrast to the book where life is portrayed as anything other than peaceful. According to the article she doesn't seem to like Defoe much either, again in contrast to this book, and she seems to have a lot of sympathy for her father - which is surprising considering the allegations they make in this book.

I'm not sure what to make of the allegations they make against their father, I don't understand why this wasn't addressed in the earlier book or why they waited until he was dead to make this information public. I hope the two remaining quints find the peace that alluded their sisters but I'm not sure if anyone will ever know for sure what went on behind the cameras.
I did not like the style of writing nor the true story.. The father would have been arrested for molestation and abuse (and the mother) if it happened today. It is such a very sad story and I applaud the sisters for making it through to live their own lives. I guess it had to be told but I could hardly stand it. Sorry.
