The Story of Princess Olivia Charles Egbert 9781593731472 Books Reviews

I enjoyed Princess Olivia enormously. Egbert has a whimsical touch that will charm children and grown-ups alike. He writes from the perspective of a clever young Princess facing the various challenges and absurdities of life. A good book for little girls and boys alike that reminds us all that you can depend on some people some of the time, but life is unpredictable so you better be ready to depend on your own creativity, kindness and courage.
Charles Egbert mentions Alice in Wonderland in his acknowledgements, and I can see a connection between Princess Olivia and this classic. Carroll's Queen of Hearts--so fond of the "Off with their heads!" line--is a bizarre character, but of course she lives in Wonderland, so the bizarre is not as extreme there as it might be here. King Horace and Queen Cora in Egbert's story are merely eccentric. Where they match up nicely with Carroll's royalty is in their dedicated self-absorbtion! They do love their daughter Olivia--abstractly, anyway--but the king can't seem to get his mind off his gouty big toe, and the queen... well, the queen is just a terrible flibbertigibbet, or in the parlance of the day, an airhead.

Nevertheless, they mean well, and the King and Queen provide a good deal of comedy in this entertaining tale. They are soon accompanied in their search for the missing Olivia (and in their comedic antics) by a Prince Dropoffsky. If there is a hero in this story, however, it's really a heroine, not the prince but Olivia herself. She is the one who must suffer the insufferable Count Carlos Maximillian von Dusseldorf ("with two s's"), and it is she who finally outwits him and escapes from his stinky prison and his foul pizza breath. Olivia is a spunky young princess who gives the Count quite a tongue lashing, and only desists when Dusseldorf calls on the magic of Georgette, a kind of Pygmalion girl or genie from a bottle.

If I had to compare another "children's" book, beloved by both children and adults, with Princess Olivia, it would be one of Roald Dahl's, perhaps The B.F.G. The pixie Georgette reminds me of the Big Friendly Giant. The kid in a Dahl book is always the hero--as in Princess Olivia--and the fantastic Big Friendly Giant, like the fantastic Georgette, almost steals the show. Georgette works her magic with the aid of poetry, and she rhymes like a slammer!

If you want to read your kid or grandkid a highly entertaining tale, you can't do better than this, and you'll enjoy it yourself!
My granddaughter loved this book, her name is Olivia )
A nice old fashioned Princess story to be read aloud and later have the child read on their own.
I like the book but it is missing one thing… The theme!
