This is a rather dark and tough-minded book about a young woman growing up in the foster care system of Baltimore whose friends and few relatives are embroiled in drugs and crime. She finds an outlet in boxing and is smitten by a male boxer -- and yet also repelled. Her upbringing has made her resistant to any kind of reliance on anyone else. For much of the book, the narrative is rather compelling and the love affair, when it erupts, is convincing. The descriptions of boxing and training are also interesting. But as the book progresses, we get less and less boxing and more and more melodrama revolving around criminal gang violence. The book ends with nothing resolved -- you have to read on to the next installment to find out what happens -- and I'm not interested enough to do that. I must say I thoroughly dislike these kinds of books which leave the reader hanging. It's fine to write trilogies - but each volume needs to stand alone and end with some closure.Tags : Outside The Ropes - Kindle edition by Ashley Claudy. Outside The Ropes edition by Ashley Claudy Romance eBooks Reviews
Ms. Claudy can certainly tell a good story. Her writing is tight, her pacing flows, her characters are rich and three-dimensional, and the dialogue feels authentic.
I am enamored with Regan. She's tough, tender, hard-as-nails, and vulnerable. I feel her pulse beating in my chest. A no-nonsense heroine, a fierce friend, a champion. I so want her to find her HEA.
Gage. Anthony. Silas. Dexter. Four prominent male figures interacting with Regan, each trying to sway her, to persuade her to their way of thinking. Each strong in their own right. Each weak over her.
A good supporting cast of characters, too. I adore Nan. My heart broke. James. Leona. All of them. Made real by this talented writer.
Only "peeve" I had was the author's choice to not use apostrophes. I don't understand why she chose to put significance on something that isn't affected by speech, but is visible in print. It annoyed me enough to warrant mention.
I am about to pick up the next book in the series. I care about these characters too much to stop reading now.
This is the first book in the Outside The Ropes series. It does end with a little cliffhanger, but the 2nd book is out so you can start reading right away. This is a good start to the series and has me curious about what will happen next. I do wish we would have gotten some from Gage's perspective, to see what's going through his head.
Regan is a fighter, she's been fighting her whole life. After an attack in an alley, she ends up meeting Anthony Fields, who is a cop. And she also meets Silas, Gage, and Dexter. Gage is a boxer.
I did really like Regan. Some things threw me off at first, but I got over it. Mostly it was the situation with Anthony.
Anthony is definitely a stage 5 clinger. I didn't really like him at all. She told him nothing would come of it, and he was basically the girl and still thought they would have more.
Gage, hmm, he's a protector, that's for sure. But both he and Regan are hard headed. I can't wait to see where the next book takes them. Especially after everything that went on at the end of this book.
I did what many of us do when we are deciding whether or not to read a book, I look at the blurb and then read some reviews and make a decision. It had all what I loved. Hot boxer. Check. Feisty, sassy female lead. Check. Love story between both. Check. But while it did have all those things, it did miss a few key elements.
Gage and Rea are a great couple that you love how they go back and forth with one another. Too bad this didn't happen until about 60% into the book. The first 59% was just a rush of confusion that it was hard to follow. Rea struggles to survive with the life that she was given and we have no idea how she got there. Where are her parents? What happened to them? She never even mentions them once which I find crazy because at least we would get that.
For her relationship with Gage, I did like how they were together. He is also an enigma that we don't hear much about. Of course this could change in the next two books, but right now it's not giving us much to work with. I don't know where she comes from or what got her to where she is in the book.
When the story did get to the conflict, I found it very interesting, but like other parts of the story, it felt rushed. It felt like we were just rushing to try and get to the end. There is a bit of a cliffhanger but you could predict what was going to happen because there are two more books. But if I didn't know that it might have surprised me more.
So yeah it's a rushed book that could have benefitted to slow down, but I am invested enough in the story to try the next book out. Could be a waste of time or could be worth it. Only time will tell.
Action packed gritty drama that really pulls at the heartstrings. This isn't your typical romance with the damsel in need of rescue. In fact the whole cast of characters could use a lending hand.
Reagan is no pushover and while her story is tragic it is never artificial nor melodramatic.
I typically am not a fan of the love triangle or cliffhanger but when it's written this well you can't help but be seduced by the exceptional storytelling. Outside The Ropes has all the makings of a grand story and I am impatiently yet eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series . Get your ringside seats to this epic tale.
Very quick read. A nice quick "adult book" that I wouldn't be embarrassed to be reading in front of more conservative family (unlike other "colorful" books) since it was on a and they couldn't tell what I was reading -)
I recommend this book for a nice quick weekend/roadtrip read.
